Megaupload & Softsub

Note: This is a pretty long post, so I put all the important parts in BOLD. You can just read those parts ;) Information about softsubs is in the postscript.

I'm sure that you all have know by now that Megaupload is no longer available. That meant that the membership we paid for as well as all our files are also gone. As we use Megaupload as a storage space for all of our members, a lot of our work are now lost. We're trying our best to regroup as well as get in contact with the members that have gone on hiatus in hope of retrieving some of the work. We also need to find another site to upload our stuff. Fileserve is no longer working and there are rumors that mediafire and filesonic will soon shut down too, while other sites have began deleting a lot of files in order to escape the FBI. There are people saying that anyone who uploads copyright infringement files may also get prosecuted as well so we are being extra careful. Until we can find an absolutely safe way to get our files to you, we won't be uploading anything. Don't worry, though, we will still be working on the drama, so when the time comes, we will do a huge batch release.

I was going to make this announcement when we do our next release, but seeing as I don't know when that will be, I'll do it now. Someone has informed us that our release subtitles (Ep1-4) have been stolen by Multimedia, a Malaysian company to sell for profit. We can't do anything because we don't have a claim on BBJX and that company does (which includes all subtitles). However, we can't just sit around and do nothing. So our team has decided to buy the DVD, and use their subtitles to give to everyone for free. For those who are curious, here's the link to seller's site:

BUT DO NOT BUY IT. Like I've said, we will be uploading and encoding the subtitles into hardsubs to release to you. Their subtitles are horrible, anyway (bad grammar, spelling, etc), so we need to do some serious editing and some parts will probably have to be our own translation but I believe that this is the best way we can get revenge. If not for Megaupload, this would mean that our releases will be faster but... Anyway, we will try our best to find a new site ASAP so I'll see everyone when we do.

P.S. We will be accepting donation for softsubs (10 USD). Softsubs will be release faster than hardsub as we don't have to encode it and we can send over email, therefore no worry about uploading sites. Today, this post is about our need of English Editors/QC. Our members used to have double jobs as both translator and QC but now our numbers are dropping drastically and we need some new members. Of course this applies to Translators and Timers also. So if you're interested in those position please, please apply. Right now, however, we're opening up positions for Editors/QC. To qualify for that position you have to be fluent in English (Chinese speaker prefer, but not required). By fluent, we mean that you have to have great control in grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc. We will have you write one paragraph (5-7 sentences) about a topic of choice in English to see your level of fluency. An Update Before the Holidays

Hi Everyone,

Let me start off by saying that we are not dropping the BBJX project. I know that releases have been slow, but there is a reason for that, which I will give in more details below. Since the last release, two of our Chinese translators have gone on hiatus, due to real life issues. That brings our list of translators down to just three, two of whom are working on both the BBJX episodes and the Donors Rewards interviews. Luckily, our translators are very efficient so we are getting work done.

The Status of the Episodes and Donation Rewards
Episode 5 is completely done on our part but, as stated in the previous post, we have trouble uploading it. I don't know if it's the encoding or the raws, but we are unable to upload this episode. We are currently trying different encoding methods as well as using different sources to try to fix the problem. We have several of the other episodes done or nearly done, but I don't want to skip episode 5 to upload the others, so please be patient as we try to work out a solution. I'm pretty sure that everyone can expect a batch release after the holidays.

As for our donor project, it is also slowly but surely getting done. Like I've mentioned above, we are down two translators already, so our work is getting slower. Also, our first priority is the BBJX episodes. But do not worry, it will get done.

Donations and Softsubs
We have receive both emails and comments asking if we could release soft-subs as a Donor Reward. We haven't really considered that before as our team is quite resolve not to release soft subs. However, we do want to get a team premium account on both megaupload and mediafire and the donations so far haven't been enough. We also experimented with ads but that was not working out. By releasing the softsubs to just a few people, I think it would be easier for us to keep track and make sure no one upload it. One suggestion was to make a slight change to every softsub that we release so that, if someone violates our rule and upload it, we would know who, which sounded like a good idea to me. However, I'm still on the fence about it. What does everyone think about it? If we are going to release softsub, I think the donation amount would be $10 (for all episodes). Note that this is for softsubs alone, not to include the subbed interviews and novel translations. The hardsubbed videos, of course, would remain free and available to all. Please comment below on what you think of the idea.

Issues with the Videos
I saw some comments mentioning that there is an issue with the video and audio not syncing in our recent episodes. I downloaded the episodes myself to check and see no problems. But I do wonder how many people have trouble with this. If you do, please leave a comment below. If it's a big problem, we will look into the video itself and try to see if it's something we can fix.

We do have two pieces of good news. One is, thanks to Huike, we managed to encode our files to less than 780MB rather than more than 900 something, while still keeping the HD quality. Our second release! It's a bit later than we expected because of problems with encoding but it's out now. We would like to remind everyone that we do not allow our work to be uploaded on another account whether it is streaming (youtube, dailymotion, etc) or downloading (megaupload, mediafire, etc). We have both streaming and downloading options here so there's no excuse for uploading on your own personal account. We are currently experimenting with mediafire, for those that prefer it over megaupload, but it will probably be in split files unless we get enough money for a premium membership. Well, that's it. Update on BBJX

Hey guys and gals,

First off, thank you all for your encouraging comments. It is nice to know that our work are appreciated by so many. The whole BBJX fiasco have ended with those making the accusations sending their apologies to us. But, alas, the bitter feelings still linger. I would like to say that we have completely forgive and forget but the truth is, we are all humans and prone to our emotions. It's not easy to get over someone repeatedly accusing your hard work as plagiarism. Yes, those involved had already apologized and we accept their apology. But that doesn't mean we can forget right away.

But before I get into that, let me quickly clarify something. Neither me or any of our team members have anything against Viki. We know better than stereotype based on one or two people. If you read my comments and post, I have never wrote anything degrading about the site. My words were directed toward those who commented and accuse us (one of them being the channel manager for BBJX at Viki). But even then, I've never attacked them personally. All I've stated was the facts of the situations and the reaction on our side. I respect Viki for their works, especially those on the BBJX Team. Two of their members have actually send me an email, apologizing for their channel manager. And for this, I am grateful. Therefore, this fight wasn't with Viki (just basically one Viki-er), and I would love nothing more than for you guys to continue supporting their site.

Now, what, you ask, does this mean for our BBJX project? Well, the truth is, we haven't decided yet. Some of our translators, though not angry, are still disappointed. You see, the group of us who started Faeries Team actually met on another subbing team. However, that team have too much real life drama going on, with subbers fighting over ways to translate, and who gets more credit than who, etc. We quit that team to get away from all of that and hoping to create a team without so much dispute. That's why we decided on the name Faeries and call this blog dramafairyland. It's because we hope that this place can be like a fairyland, a place with no conflicts, just love for dramas. This whole incident, however, just reminded us of what we were trying to get away from. Some of our members feel that if conflicts are unavoidable in the fansubbing world, then they rather get out of it. That's why I think it's best to let our team take a break for now. Let everyone cools off and then, we'll make a final decision. This allows us not to do anything rash (like completely dropping this project) and give us more time to quality checked the episodes that we have already done. We are going to release those episodes. Cutzie, our guest translator/editor who you might know from Mangnolia Team (who are translating BBJX the novel), said she will have time later this week to QC so I want to let her do that, as I've noticed some small mistakes on episode 1 after we already released it. Therefore episode 2 will probably be released at the end of this week, or early next week. As for episode 3-5, we are almost (more than 80%) done with them and we do plan on finishing them. After that, however, is to be decided on a later date. I hope you will bear with us until there.

Once again, thank you for supporting and encouraging us. We greatly appreciated it.

The Future of our Bu Bu Jing Xin Project and Response to the Viki Team

I can't believe this is happening when we have just started our project, but we might suspend/drop it. We only sub dramas because we want to share our love of them to the rest of the world, but who to expect that we would get hate in return? Some of you may have seen comments on this blog from the people in the Viki team accusing us of stealing their subs. Let me start off by clarifying our relationship with Viki. One of our translators, xiaolongnu, knows a member of the Viki team (I won't mention names because I don't know if she wants to be mentioned or not). Xiaolongnu has asked that member to join our team but that member stated that she can't as she have school coming up and she have already commit to Viki, as it is easier to sub on there than for an official subbing team. However, that member have already translated the trailer (all by herself without any help from other Viki member) so she said it's fine for us to use her translation. We gave her the credit for the translation of that video. Later on, that member contacted Xiaolongnu, asking what translations are we (Faeries) using for some of the Qing Dynasty titles, as some of them are confusing. Xiaolongnu help that member compiled a list of common titles and names. That member posted that list as a guide for the people at Viki. Which is fine for they compiled it together and Xiaolongu didn't mind or want credit. That compiled list is the one our subbing team uses as well, which is why there are some similarities in our subtitles.

Today, as I went on the blog, preparing to release episode 2. I saw 3 comments on different pages of our blog, accusing us of stealing Viki subs (made by the same or different persons, I don't know). Now, our episodes are divided into many parts for translations with different translators as to reduce the workload. I, of course, trust every member of our team. Therefore, I asked them if they have any evidence. They respond with

"Hi Yang Xio, my member of my team in viki have seen the lines which is ours ("I'm dreaming" "Second Miss")... Therefore, I would like you to not use those.. but, if you do want to use those lines.. Please give credits to us.. therefore, I would like to know if you want to use our subs.. Please let me know by pm me on viki and and please to make sure to give us credits.. if not.. please refrain from using our subs... thank you..."

Alright. Seriously? Because we used "I'm dreaming" and "Second Miss," which they apparently used too, we're stealing their subs? And if we want to use those words, we have to give credits to them? That just ridiculous. I told them just as much. They replied back with 12 lines from the episode we subbed that are "similar" to theirs. 12 lines out of nearly 1000 that we've done. Some of those are "jie-jie," "Second Miss," "let's go back" "I'm your older sister." When you're translating from the same thing, you're bound to have a couple of lines that you translated the same. Especially with lines as simple as those, how else are you supposed to translate them?! I've asked them to watch our video, instead of repeatedly insisting we stole their subs without any evidence. They finally grudgingly admit that more than a few lines are different (they only said a few before) :

"No, I wouldn't even make a comment without a sound judgement. It's so easy to tell, especially when you're used to using fansubs from several subbing groups. Yes, I've seen that not everything is the same "technically", but I did say there are a few spots (I watched it the second time and realised there weren't just few.) It is in the simple sentences that you'd be able to tell that the subs are lifted off from ViKi. You might have improved translation for some lines, and simplified sentence structures in others, it can't be that for simple sentences, even the punctuations are the same. I'd rather have you guys in the ViKi team actually improving the translations and editing there than you guys ripping their subs."

So if the lines are the same, we stole from Viki and if they're different, it's because we improved the lines we got from Viki? How many ways can we translate a simple sentence (i.e. "Let's go back"). As for punctuation, I think we all learned in elementary school to put a comma when there's a pause, a period at the end of the sentence, a question mark at the end of a question, and an exclamation point at the end of an exclamation. How are we supposed to differentiate from that? Are we supposed to translate our video, then go to Viki, and check to see if any of our subs are the same, and change those that are (even the punctuation)?

This is a big discouragement to our team, as the thing that we hate the most is people stealing our subs and now people are accusing us of doing that. Imagined working on a project for days, only to have people saying that you stole the project from them. I was hoping to have a civil chat with them, especially the one claiming to be the manager, to clear off the misunderstanding but they just keep repeatedly accusing us of stealing their subs. We started a new fansubbing team to get away from all the real life drama, but end up in one instead. At this point, our translators are angry, frustrated, and discouraged. We don't even know if we want to continue on subbing this drama or not. Cause I won't be able to stand us being accused for every single episode that we release. So even though we're done with episode 2, and more than halfway done with 3-5, we're seriously consider dropping the project. Our subbing team started because we want viewers to be able to suggest projects and see some of the less well-known/popular dramas subbed. Like I said, it was started on love, but now it might end in hate.

This post is to let everyone know what is going on and to get back justice for our team, because I certainly feel like injustice was done.

Regarding Soft Subtitles and File Size

Some of you have been asking if we will distribute soft subs for Bu Bu Jing Xin. The answer to that question is a determined "No." The reason being that we have experienced, while being on another fansubbing team, people stealing our softsubs, encoding it, then uploading it as their own video. I have to say this is the biggest insult to the hard work that a team puts in to sub a drama. To prevent that from happening, we swore off soft-subtitles. Because if that ever happens here, I think all of us will be discouraged enough to drop the drama and I'm sure no one wants that to happen. On this note, we would like to remind everyone not to upload/post our videos anywhere else. You can link to this blog or the video/download link itself. If we find that anyone had upload or post the video on their own page, we will consider dropping this project or make it exclusive.

All that aside, we do realize that our file is pretty large (almost 1gb). However, this is to ensure the quality of our video, as you can see, it is in HD. We would like to ask your opinion, though. Would you prefer HD quality/large file size or Average quality/smaller file size? Vote below and leave a comment and we'll take your opinions in consideration.

SYNOPSIS
Zhang Xiao (Liu Shi Shi), a contemporary, ethnically Han Chinese young woman from the 21st century, accidentally travels back in time to the Qing Dynasty period during the reign of Kangxi Emperor after experiencing a deadly combination of traffic collision and electrocution, resulting her somehow reliving the life of one of her previous incarnations and forcing her to assumes the identity belongs to her past avatar: Maertai Rouxi (Liu Shi Shi), teenage daughter of a Manchu nobleman, who also had a near-fatal incident in her own time which Zhang awakes from.

Being stranded in the past, in the body of a centuries earlier incarnation of herself, and believe by many of Maertai's family and friends that the sudden change of her behavior and memory loss is resulted of her head injury, Zhang Xiao awares that there will be a dangerous power struggle known to history between the scheming princes for the throne, which will results Aisin-Gioro Yinzhen, Fourth Prince (Nicky Wu), to succeed as the Yongzheng Emperor after his father's death. Zhang Xiao tries to change the future outcomes for the better, hoping to prevents any casualty as written in the future without interfering a man's destiny, while trying to find a way to return to her time period. However, Zhang ultimately realizes that, not only she fails to alter the course of the approaching events, but also, under a predestination paradox, she is fated to become an instigator of the tragedy she tries to prevent resulted by her actions in the past and the princess' romantic affections towards her.

Hello, we are a nine members subbing team. We are dedicated to sub Chinese, Korean, Japanese, as well as other dramas. Our goal is to provide subtitles for underrated dramas and share them with the world. Our first project will be Bu Bu Jing Xin starring Liu Shi Shi.
